Labradorite is a popular feldspar gem. It tends to form crystalline masses that are compressed together forming multiple layers of stone. Labradorite has an iridescence caused by light interference that often produces a blue/green or yellow sheen or glow that sweeps across the entire stone. The colors can spread over a large area or break into patches of different colors including blue, green, yellow and gold.
The major source of labradorite is on the north central coast of Labrador, Canada, where big blocks of the material are available. Labradorite is the mineral emblem for the province. |
